DOLPHINFREE project
DOLPHINFREE’s ambition is to propose prototypes : – an acoustic device emitting a signal that can be understood and interpreted by dolphins, to alert them to the presence of the net and the associated risk of mortality (dolphins understand the mortality of their fellow dolphins, according to scientific studies). With a range of 500m, a […]
Good practices
Adaptation of practices, example to reduce cetacean bycatches
Fishing practices can influence the accidental capture of marine mammals. Thus, some fleets, by improving their knowledge of the context of their interactions with cetaceans, have been able to adapt their practices and reduce their impact on dolphin populations. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these measures depends objectively on the fleets, the initial fishing practices, the […]

Acoustic reflector
Acoustic reflectors are considered passive repellents in that they do not emit sound into the marine environment, unlike pingers. These reflectors can be ropes or other devices made of metallic materials, which are placed in the middle of the net, between the bottom and float lines, and increase the reflectivity of the net so that […]

Illumination of fishing nets
The installation of LEDs in fishing gear can improve the visibility of fishing nets and thus reduce the incidental capture of certain large marine vertebrates. These lights are automatically activated when the nets are submerged and can be of different colours and intensity depending on the species to be alerted.

“Pingers” acoustic repellents for gillnetters (PIFIL project)
The pinger is an acoustic deterrent device designed to reduce the bycatch of cetaceans (ex : common dolphins). It emits an effective sound signal to repel these species. The pinger is activated on contact with the water by emitting a series of ultrasounds that are perceptible to the auditory system of the mammals without causing […]

Acoustic repellents « Pingers » and reflectors for netters and pelagic trawlers (LICADO project)
The pinger is an acoustic deterrent device designed to reduce the accidental capture of cetaceans (here, common dolphins). It emits a sound signal that is effective in repelling these species. The pinger is activated by contact with the water, emitting a series of ultrasounds that can be heard by the mammals’ auditory system without causing […]
